Software and Apps for Students with Sensory Difficulties
Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator
The TI-84 is a very common calculator in high school math courses from Algebra 1 through Calculus. For students with a visual impairment, the Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator (a modified TI-84 calculator with an attachment on top) can allow that student to participate in a higher level math course without seeing the complex graphs that are studied. Some of the key features are the ability to graph functions and trace points made accessible with speech and audible tone, to listen to entire graph including special sounds for negative regions and axis crossing points, and to use the screen reader to review the screen without losing your place. |

ViewPlus with MathType and Tiger Software
I use MathType by Design Science in my classroom to create all of my worksheets for my students with the many mathematical symbols that are involved in an Algebra 1 course. MathType pairs with Tiger Software and ViewPlus in order to convert the mathematical symbols into braille and print them embossed so that student who cannot see the worksheet can still participate. |

Math Robot
App designed for use with blind and visually impaired students to practice arithmetic facts. It features low vision mode, VoiceOver support, and Braille support. Students who struggle with arithmetic generally have more trouble with Algebra 1, so extra opportunities for practice are always important. |
